Our Middle School youth group gathers again on Friday September 9, from 6.30-8.30pm (back to the old timings!), at Church of the Ascension (4729 Ellsworth Avenue). I am pleased with how many have already signed up, but wanted to share a bit here about what we have planned. Hopefully this is clarifying for those already committed, and might help others who would be interested and have questions.
This fall we are starting a series of “Christ-centered, Chronological Bible Studies” that are produced by LifeWay, come recommended by an experienced youth-ministry friend of mine, and look excellent so far.
I am reminded of that famous moment at the end of Luke’s Gospel in which a couple of disciples are walking to Emmaus, are joined by the Resurrected Jesus (who they don’t recognize) and… “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27).
My hope and prayer for this cohort of middle schoolers is that they learn to walk, together, with Jesus, who walks with them off the pages of Scripture. And so I have evoked that Gospel moment by calling this series ‘Emmaus’.
And here is what a typical Friday night looks like.
6.15pm – Early birds can arrive for pizza, which is served downstairs after you walk in through the Glass Doors at the Neville st entrance to Ascension.
6.30pm – Everyone arrives for a bit of free-time, games, pizza and catching up in the big basement area.
6.45pm – We head upstairs and gather on the couches in room 105 and launch the main evening’s program. The long-suffering Youth Director will take a shot of hot sauce to welcome each new friend, before beginning the main big group Bible study.
7.20pm – We move out into different small groups for some ‘share n prayer’ time.
7.50pm – Various free time fun options.
8.15pm – We sing together in the main church.
8.30pm – Goodbyes, and heading out to cars in the Neville parking lot.
There’s your brief overview and I look forward to seeing you soon!
If you haven’t yet signed up, please do so here, via this quick and easy google form. It is very helpful if you can do so by the end of Monday September 5. Thanks!!
And don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
